Amalia’s textile work for Rhythm section x Subsun, is using traditional methods, learned from the artist Mas Tatang, master of Batik in Tembi, Indonesia, and questions the uses of such tools and materials as much as the philosophical relationship to ancestors and the afterlife and transmission of ideas through society’s collective memory.
The mastery of these techniques is then brought into dialogue with that of contemporary Western printing and technology. The use of natural pigments, colors extracted from fruits, bark or trees, are mixed with that of chemical processes. These varied processes both old and new are brought together on an array of surfaces that include textiles, papers, and plastic and which range in thickness, opacity and fluidity.
Immersion into a motif, unfolding in imaginary countries, draw us into unknown territories. Amalia’s prints invite us to journey through forms captured in nature or everyday life, and then play the role of witness to careful observation. The exploration of this work, singular and varied, located between worlds, leaves the field open to interpretation.
